A team comprising the Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) and Kenya Ports Authority is currently participating in a Japan International Cooperation Agency-organized SEZ benchmarking visit to Bangladesh. The visit aims to provide practical insights into effective planning, development, and management of Special Economic Zones, while strengthening Kenya’s capacity to attract and sustain investment.During the visit, the delegation toured the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), a flagship public-private partnership jointly developed by Sumitomo Corporation (61%), the Government of Bangladesh (24%), and JICA (15%). Sumitomo Corporation serves as the developer of the zone, demonstrating a strong model of private sector-led SEZ development. At BSEZ Ltd, three enterprises are currently operational: Beko/Singer from Turkey, an electrical appliances manufacturer; Lion Corporation from Japan, a detergent manufacturer; and Artnature from Japan, a human hair products manufacturer. These companies illustrate the zone’s ability to attract diverse and high-value international investors. The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority is responsible for overseeing both Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and Special Economic Zones (SEZs), providing a coordinated institutional framework for their development and management. This benchmarking visit offers valuable lessons that will inform the continued development and operationalization of SEZs in Kenya, including key projects such as Dongo Kundu, while strengthening partnerships between Kenya and Japan.
